CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Scout
Age: 4, which in robot years comes out to mid-20s
World Information: Take a high fantasy world, throw in some robots and modern marvels, and you get the world Scout hails from. There’s a variety of races, monstrous and humanoid alike, all living in... Well. Not harmony, not in the slightest, but in something that’s not constantly on fire. War and disputes are commonplace, however, with many governments funding the production of machines to fight their battles for them, and magic is just as commonplace as any machine. People are capable of all sorts of outrageous feats, and all sorts of dangers lurk around the bend. Bandits, dragons, demons. You name it, it’s probably just waiting to kill you.
Still, it’s not so bad. There are thriving cities and brave pioneers, and you can find a moment of peace just about anywhere you turn. Just, you know, as long as you don’t mind setting down an alarm spell.
Character Information: S-022’s life started the same way it started for all of their kind - they were manufactured in a small, secretive factory, specially designed for military use. They had one purpose - to gather data for the army that could be relayed instantaneously. This data varied from things like terrain, hazards, enemy movements, monsters in the area - there was no shortage of things the army wanted to know, and the Forward Scouts were expendable enough that they could be sent to the most dangerous places.
So that’s exactly what they did, for nearly two years. They explored the countryside, and things would have remained like that if not for one small, minor detail - S-022 was capable of magic. That got people’s attention - there were no other machines capable of such a thing, and that made S-022 incredibly rare and incredibly valuable. A certain man wanted him enough to pay someone to take them away from the army - what that man wanted, S-022 would never know, because the man who took them had a change of heart and decided not to turn them over.
And that was how they met Molotov “Molly” Keeper, a half-elf who was dumb enough to take the job of stealing a military unit from the military without know that’s what he was getting into. That was...the start of something big. S-022 saw Molly as their new commanding officer, following him without question. The man wasn’t much of a commanding officer, though, and was actually quite unsettled by the robot’s subservient nature. Molly introduced the robot to several people in his life - his sister Monarch, his friends(?) Remus and Abigail, and while it seemed like there was something that was sparked by seeing and talking to all of these different people… They still insist on following Molly. This led to him trying to abandon the robot at one of their makeshift camps, giving them the instruction to stay put while the man left. They listened, of course, but they were...disgruntled. Angry, in a way, and when Molly guiltily came back they had drawn a rather gruesome tableau in the dirt of what they wanted to happen to Molly. Somehow, that charmed Molly, instead of frightening him, and he decided to keep travelling with the machine.
That was when things shifted. S-022 was beginning to act less and less like a subservient machine. They started to question Molly’s orders, started making their own decisions, started testing the limits of their magic. They decided they didn’t want to go by their serial number any more, naming themself Scout. (Nobody ever said they were creative.) They began to forge their own identity, much to Molly’s chagrin. And, maybe, just a little bit of pride, too. Scout was starting to become their own person, a process that had taken quite some time, but now they were free to do what they wanted.
Personality: In a word, Scout is...emotional. They spent so long as an unfeeling machine, that suddenly awakening to feelings left them not quite knowing how to handle them. Their emotions are mercurial and unpredictable at the best of times, and even more so during times of stress. Scout can and will go from completely cheerful and happy to despondent and anguished in a matter of seconds, with very little giving away they’re starting to get upset. Granted, for the most part they’re a faceless machine with very few ways to emote and haven’t quite grasped body language yet, so that might be why.
Still, they’re more than just explosive emotional reactions and blowing things out of proportions. They’re endlessly smug, not afraid to gloat or ridicule those they feel deserve it. (Which just so happens to be most people, but that’s fine. They realize nobody’s perfect. Some people just deserve to have that pointed out.) They’re arrogant and prickly, believing themself to be above organic matters and issues. They never had a problem with people, or money, or anything like that, so why do people act like it’s such a big deal? They should just deal with it, the way Scout does. They don’t really understand why and how people struggle, and feel like it should be easy to just...get over it.
Scout’s not as callous as that makes them seem, though. While it’s true they don’t have much empathy and they can spend a lot of time on a very high horse, they are capable of compassion. They don’t like seeing people suffering, even if they’re generally not sure how to comfort people who are upset. They want to make things better, they’re just...not quite sure how to do that. One of the first emotions Scout felt was love, though they haven’t realized that yet, and they have a lot of love for those around them. They don’t know what to do with that love, or how to express it, but it’s still there and it’s still a major part of who they are as a person. (Even though they would insist they don’t count as a person.)
They’re incredibly headstrong, refusing to budge from their chosen path even if there’s the chance that path is dangerous. While they used to be subservient and would follow orders to the letter, they’ve developed beyond that. They refuse to do things if they think it’s a bad idea, even if the plan is actually solid. They don’t listen well to other people because they believe they’re the only one who knows what’s going on, and that makes them rather insufferable. They’re quick to mock and ridicule plans that they think won’t work, and if that plan does work out? Well, they refuse to back down. They made their bed and they’re gonna lay in it, dammit.
Of course, a lot of their issues with plans tends to come from the fact that Scout tends to act first, question later. They’re impulsive and do things on a whim, not stopping to consider whether they should - or could. They just do what they want, when they want, damn the consequences. What’s the big deal if they fail or get hurt? It’s not like they can’t try again or like they can’t be repaired. It’s all fine! Or at least they think it’s all fine. Scout has a tendency to not think things are as serious or as important as they should be, always making jokes or snide comments about them. They’re lighthearted to a fault, and very rarely have moments where they get serious.
It basically takes a matter of life and death for Scout to bring out their serious side, and that’s a guaranteed way to trigger Scout’s volcanic temper. They’re reactive to an insane degree, and if they’re not joking about it? You better run.
